Did you know that since 1812, with the birth of the constitution of Cadiz "La Pepa", Es Migjorn Gran tried to become independent from the University of Mercadal and get its own town hall?

However, it was not until 1820 when the governor Guillem de Montis, with the aim of avoiding confrontations between the different towns of the Mercadal university, decided to accede to the request of the "migjorners" and granted them the possibility of having their own town hall. At the end of that same year, the rector Pere Villalonga certifies that the parish of San Cristòfol has 1,004 inhabitants and therefore the necessary instructions are given to make the new town hall and designate its members. On January 1, 1821, the town hall began to function. Its first mayor will be Onofre Coll Allès, master of Binicodrell de Dalt. Despite all the efforts, this situation did not last long since the summer of 1823 would mean the repeal of the constitution of 1812 and with it, all the constitutional councils were dissolved. Es Migjorn Gran is once again part of the University of Mercadal i Castell de Santa Àgeda.

Did you know that the town's church, San Cristòfol, began to be built before the year 1750?

Indeed, this church began to be built just before 1750 and it was blessed in 1769. It has been expanded over time (especially at the end of the 18th century) to increase its capacity and improve qualities such as lighting and/or access. The interior is of great constructive simplicity, without ornamentation, and with a great luminosity. The plant has a single nave, with side chapels connected to a dome and large windows, and a quadrangular apse finished with a semicircular apse. This shows the only ornamentation of the set, based on concentric grooves. During the civil war, the images in the church were destroyed. Above the entrance to the main door is the bell tower, which is a quadrangular tower. The architectural form of this church is very similar to the churches of Mercadal and Ferreries.
